Not to be confused with the Meatpuppets' glorious Out My Way, Ben Kweller's sophomore album has arrived. On My Way moves a little away from his debut with a little more mature sound. I still hear Rivers Cuomo in his voice but Ben is starting to find his own niche. The album starts out with "I Need You Back", a track that starts out with a cool little guitar riff. It builds up as Ben starts singing and jumps in at the chorus without overpowering. It comes off being one of my favorite Ben songs off of both albums. On "Hospital Bed" Ben does his best Stephen Malkmus impression. Not bad but a little to Pavementesque. Sometimes I shake my head at Ben's choice of style. "Ann Disaster" had so much potential but it really faded out fast with the repetition of "I know what you want, you want a piece of me". It ends up being one of the most boring rock songs ever. But he does follow that up with one of the best songs on the album, "Believer". It's a gentle, almost ballad style showing Kweller's heart. On My Way is a comparable album to Kweller's debut. He hasn't moved in leaps and bounds but he has managed to instill a little more maturity into his music.
