Now I'm not one to go for avant-garde music and I'm not really sure if one would categorize Scottish based singer/songwriter Richard Youngs as an avant-garde musician, but I found myself intrigued with what Richard had to offer on this album. He is definitely not new to the scene. He has numerous albums out but River Through the Howling Sky is the first time I have caught up with him. The album looks like a brief 4 songs but then you see that those songs span 44 minutes of your precious listening time. River starts out with "Fountain Of Light", a great introduction into Youngs music. The feeling on the song is a little spooky with almost a whirring sound creating the backdrop. Windchimes let you feel even more of the ensuing chaos as Richard torments his guitar (in a great way) and lays his charming vocals over top. His vocals are what makes this album listenable for me. The music is enjoyable but difficult at times. The wind chimes seem to be a theme throughout the album giving you the impression of a Howling Sky. The closing 24 minute song, "Red Cloud Singular" was a bit of a stretch for me but if you aren't really thinking about the music, it works great as a background. You don't have a rhythm to worry about. This music is definitely for people looking for something a little different.
