I had heard good things about the Icarus Line major label debut but I had my reservations. I think it was the Buddyhead affiliation that had me fooled but if the bigwigs over at V2 see something, there is usually a good thing going on. Penance Soiree is a killer rock album, there is no doubting that. Whether or not this album becomes a top seller remains to be seen because it has it's brutally heavy moments. The Icarus Line is heavy but it's not completely inaccessible. There is a bit of groove and soul going on behind that wall of distorted guitar. For instance you could totally dance to "Caviar" or the appropriately titled "Spit On It". They do get a little cranky on a couple tracks like the noisy "Kiss Like Lizards". Imagine if Queens of the Stone Age laid off the pot for a bit and put a little more Black Flag into the mix. You might be close there. The best track by far is the reserved "Spike Island". It has everything in the right place, so much in fact, it might become a radio staple if the right person hears it. The track "Seasick" sounds like a heavier Jesus & Mary Chain. Vocalist Joe Cardimone has a very likeable voice that is capable of ripping up the mic or being a little more laid back. Either way he sounds comfortable. Guitars rage and storm throughout the album, like a caged beast. This album can be a bit of a mindfuck at times but if you are willing to be a little patient, Icarus Line may become one of your favorite bands this year.
