Ambulance Ltd was a band that showed a lot of promise with their little EP last year. Now with their full-length released we get to look at if the global band lives up to the expectations. Well the group makes a bold move on their self-titled album and start the thing out with a 5 minute rock instrumental called "Yoga Means Union". It's a track that actually performs quite well as an opener. It builds and builds and even sounds like it's ready to build some more when someone pulls the plug. The next track, called "Primitive (The Way I Treat You)", has a bit of a retro feel to it (but then again, what doesn't these days). The group takes a little power-pop and mixes it with a healthy does of Ride-era shoegazer music to come up sounding a little dated but still kind of fresh in today's music landscape. "Anecdote" has a bit of jangly guitar that could fit onto a Teenage Fanclub album quite nicely. "Stay Where You Are" really dives into the shoegazer era but does it quite nicely. It's probably the gentlest track on the album. Then on "Michigan" they leave us scratching our heads again. It is a beautiful little song with great inspiration. By the end of the album I found myself wishing there was a tad bit more edge to it, small complaint but valid. Ambulance Ltd. is a band that takes a little warming up to. Once the fire is started, though, and you learn a few of the catchy choruses you may find your next favorite song. Had Ambulance Ltd come out 10 years ago, it would have probably been overlooked but now the band is out on their own.
