I hadn't heard of this Ottawa singer/songwriter previous to receiving Songs From The Colonies but after about three listens to his new album I have found that my fondness for Alex Mortimer has grown into something I can't ignore. His vocals sound familiar but I can't place who they sound like. The vocals are very catchy even if they aren't always in key. Alex has a knack for creating some pop music even though they are almost along the folk lines of things. One of the catchiest songs on the album has to be the second track, "Easy Listening". It bops along with a nice AOR feel to it. Another interesting track is "Queenie". This one is fairly mellow with piano accompaniment. "No one understands Regina", it's about the girl not the city. The production is beautifully done by Dave Draves who has had successes with Kathleen Edwards and Jim Bryson, two other Ottawa based musicians. It's the type of album that the more you listen to it, the more you discover and the more appealing Mortimer's voice becomes. It's a rock record with pop and folk elements all over it. It could become your next favorite album if that sounds interesting to you. "Open All Night" is one of the best story songs since the Boss. Check out this album. It is sure to please.
