As much as I dislike the Fox series The O.C. this is a very decent mellower alt.rock album with leanings towards the mainstream. By that I mean that the artists on the album are the more popular underground bands that have been bubbling under for the past few years. Phantom Planet is probably the biggest of the batch with their brilliant "California" on here. They could have left off The 88's "How Good It Can Be". It was just a boring song. The Doves, on the other hand, have a great song in "Caught By The River". It's a quieter song but it is very dynamic and they deliver it in a grand manner. Not much in the way of electronic beats here save for the Finley Quaye and William Orbit track "Dice". It's a great track in the vein of Beth Orton (oh, she's on it too) and even then you would be hard pressed to call it electronica. Jet's contribution, "Move On", reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". I haven't heard the new Turin Brakes album but I like what I hear in the song "Rain City". Probably the loudest track on the album is The Dandy Warhols' "We Used To Be Friends", a catchy rock track that demands you to bop along with it. My favorite indie band, Spoon is here with their fun "The Way We Get By". It's a nice compilation with some different music that you normally don't see on the charts. For that, I'll give The O.C. credit for.
