Already 10 volumes old, the Emo Diaries makes its anniversary edition not quite as memorable as some of their past comps. I have enjoyed pretty much all of the Emo Diaries but when I heard "Brother Abel" by My Name Is Nobody, I wanted to huck the disc across the room. The song itself isn't terrible but the the production sounds like ass. Thank goodness that The Holiday Plan could get things back on track with "Projecting Power". One of Deep Elm's new signings is present here, check out the impressive Sounds Like Violence track "The Light Is Such A Beautiful Sight". The vocalist from A Mouth Of Somedays sounds a little too whiney for my likes. "Friends" is a gentle song provided by Hollywood's Lost On Purpose. Another newer signing of Deep Elm is the group Lock and Key, a band that I just don't understand. There really isn't that much musical merit in what they have to offer. Lukestar, on the other had, contributes a killer track called "Alpine Unit" that really gets me fired up. This is an up-and-coming band from Norway that we are sure to see more of. Latitude Blue almost sounds like an early R.E.M. Their "On The Corner" is another highlight on The Hope I Hide Inside. So despite the few songs that really have no purpose here but to annoy, the compilation still has a few worthy songs that warrant the purchase. I have an idea for the next Emo Diaries, bands have to contribute a song corresponding to one of 10 album titles, some great emo songs could result. Unfortunately, Volume 10 is as far as this series goes. It's been a fun ride, and it starts all over with the new series, This Is Indie Rock.
