This is one of those gems that your run across every once and a while. Eleni Mandell is a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles and is making waves with her fifth album, Afternoon. This is the first that I have been exposed to the artist and it has been nothing but pure enjoyment. Her sound has quite a bit of jazz influence but with an alternative rock edge to it. The collection is very accessible and should be widely appreciated. Her voice has some of those familiar qualities but comes off sounding fresh and quite diverse. A track like "Easy On Your Way Out" would make Chrissy Hynde jealous. "Just A Dream" is as close as you can get to a PJ Harvey sound without actually copying her. It's a brilliant song with some pretty funky bass playing going on in it. This is the kind of diversity you can expect from Mandell. Her songwriting is so clever. Even the track order is ideal. We are escorted out of her album with the gentle and delightful "Yellow Light". If you have any affection towards female singers you have to seek out Eleni Mandell's album. It really is a gem that may prove to be hard to find but well worth the effort.
