Nebraska is one of the classic albums released by the Boss. It wasn't meant to be. In fact, the damn thing is just a collection of demos but there is so much heart in this raw album than most artists put into their fully produced efforts this day and age. The title track is the story of mass murderer Charlie Starkweather. In fact, the rest of the album is about other killers and rural stories. The albums tone is perfect with nary an accompanying instrument save for Bruce's guitar and harmonica. "Atlantic City" is my favorite of many tracks on Nebraska. It's a barebones version of a Springsteen yet to come. It would have fit nicely on Born in the USA. Throw on "Johnny 99" and rock out with Bruce. It's a total rave-up that just barely fits on the album. It's followed up with the story of "Highway Patrolman", a song that is so sombre in its delivery that you think Springsteen isn't even going to make it through. Many have said that Nebraska is a great road trip album. I would only agree if you were alone on that trip, otherwise the mood will be brought so low that no one would have a good time. This is Bruce at one of his finest moments.
