Before I received this album, I hadn't heard of Mick Karn. Seems like my loss with the more I read about the fret-less bass player, the more it seems that I should have run across him. He was an integral member of the band Japan and had pretty much been dubbed one of the best bass players in the world. You might have heard his playing on many albums including Gary Numan's Dance on which he also played sax. He also recorded an album with Peter Murphy. More Better Different is a very interesting album. It's a little on the ambient side of things but not so much that the average indie listener wouldn't enjoy it. Some tracks have a bit of a rougher edge around them but Karn excels at the soft and gentle like the closing track "Great Day In The Morning". The bass playing isn't always at the forefront, something you might expect from Mick. Instead it is used as a great accompanying instrument, which really is where it belongs. "The End Gag" is a great example of this. More Better Different would definitely appeal to fans of Eno or other more ambient music but Karn's music is a little more than ambient. There is a solid rhythm on all tracks leading you through the mist. It's a nice background album.
