I was a little skeptical of hearing Sevendust, one of my favorite nu-metal acts, doing acoustic sets. The fears lay in the power that this band can have. They have been able to harness that on album and have had a number of albums without letting that go. Southside Double-Wide documents a show atthe Georgia Theatre in Athens in the fall of 2003. They pull songs from all of their albums and take the amps away and present them in a fairly stripped down version. I felt about this set like a lot of people felt about Nirvana's Unplugged set, nervous and yet a little excited. Well, I found nothing really revolutionary about Acoustic Live. I did find that one thing was solidified in my mind, Lajon Witherspoon is an amazing singer. The rest of the band just seemed like they were a little awkward with their acoustic instruments. It's hard for a thunderous riff like that of "Seasons" to come through the way it was written for. A couple of the tracks come off quite nicely like "Xmas Day". One moment that I thought was rather humorous was when they played Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" and give Johnny Cash a shout out. If you really wanted to throw something left-field in the mix play "Boy Named Sue" or "Ring Of Fire". Some fans may eat this album up but I found it to be a little overindulgent and the band does much better with power behind them.
