Ah, Sparta. I'm sure by now they are sick of hearing about their former band before a review kicks in so I will bite my lip and refrain from any such behavior. Before the release of Procelain I was lucky enough to catch Sparta here in Calgary playing a lot of their new material. Needless to say I was quite excited about this album after that. Their debut album, Wiretap Scars, was an amazing effort by this group but they still had remnants of their previous band. Porcelain shows a band shrugging off the past and moving into their own territory. On tracks like the amazing "La Cerca", the guys stretch out and present one of the best tracks they have written. Jim Ward's vocals really come through on the album but especially tracks like "Travel By Bloodline". The album starts out strong and strangely enough with some samples on "Guns of Memorial Park". It's a fantastic song. Then on "Hiss The Villain", the guys open up and totally rock out. There are some much lighter moments that actually might offend some fans but I think the open minded ones will understand that Sparta is still working to figure out who they are. With Porcelain they are damn close. This one is good but I think they still have their defining album to come yet. You have to check out Sparta if they come to your city. It was one of the greatest shows I have seen in a while.
