Nobody really knew what to think of an album that came out in 1995. I was working in a music store and I saw this album come in without much fanfare. Judging from the cover it looked like a jazz album with a bunch of frogs playing instruments. When we threw it on we were totally surprised at the children's music that spew forth, starting with the first track "Kitty". Later on in the year "Lump" hit the airwaves and everyone knew who The Presidents of the United States of America. PUSA became an international phenomenon. With catchy tracks about bugs and kittens and talking about their future as a rock band ("We are Not Going To Make It") as well as a killer cover of "Kick Out The Jams". Ballew, Dederer, and Finn never made an album quite as fine as this (the verdict is still to be delivered with their new album just released). Funky tracks like "Back Porch" are so instantly like-able that you can't deny their charm. "Boll Weevil" sticks in your head for days after listening to it. Then of course there is the super-hit "Peaches". My favorite is "Dune Buggy". I recently hauled out this album again because my one year old is craving good music and I recalled the juvenile and fun songwriting of PUSA. He loves "Kitty" and "Kick Out The Jams". His fists start pumping and his legs start moving. It made me realize the brilliance of this release. If you don't have this eponymous release you have to run out and grab it. There is more than one song that will put a smile on your face. Not to mention the great production.
