You may have heard of some fusion labels such as Six Degrees Records and Nutone and maybe even a few others that blend all sorts of world type music with danceable beats. You can thank the likes of Trans-Global Underground for creating such a niche. They have been at it since the early 90’s and until Yes Boss Food Corner have been able to say that they had the foremost Middle Eastern vocalist. Yes Boss, Natacha Atlas has unfortunately (or one would think so) decided to focus on her solo career. Does that slow Trans-Global down at all? Not one bit, even though her voice was a definite highlight the band has decided to focus on its grooves even more. The collective still pillage the Arabic, Asian, and Indian music archives for inspiration and creative juices. The group leans heavily on the funk side of things too with tracks like “Bhimpalasi Warriors that funk better than George Clinton’s dreads. The lyrics are very well presented albeit not as beautiful as Natacha’s delivery, but a nicer variety of vocalists. If you have never heard Trans-Global Underground you couldn’t do much better than to start with Yes Boss Food Corner, but if you are longing to hear what the band sounded like with Natacha at the helm reach for Psychic Karaoke.
