Ice Cube - Death Certificate
After Ice Cube left the ground-breaking gansta rap group N.W.A. he went onto a very successful solo career (and a semi-successful acting career). While AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted is a perfectly fine album, if you had to pick one to have in your collection it would arguably be Death Certificate. It is a step up in intensity than his solo debut and it stands up quite nicely over time. The commentary on the album, in between songs and during, really showcase what Death Certificate is all about. Throw Ice Cube's killer smooth and intelligent lyrics on top and you have a fucking hot hip hop album. Definitely not an album for kids, it's honest and intense with some pretty vulgar lyrics and skits. It actually makes Public Enemy look like saints. "The Wrong Nigga To Fuck Wit" and "No Vaseline" are a couple of highlights worth mentioning. It's not all dark though. Ice starts out the album with the Death side and ends off with the Life side, giving his brothers advice on how to make it alive. Death Certificate is one of hip hop's finest moments and the career high for Ice Cube. He had select tracks after this album but this was his most complete album he ever put out.
