Holy crap! I haven't heard a cover as brilliant as the Scissor Sisters' version of "Comfortably Numb" since, since, ever! It's brilliant! It sounds like a futuristic Bee Gees! And that's not even the best song on their eponymous debut. Scissor Sisters is a a bit of a funny band. They are from New York even though they sound like they should be British at times. There is only one "sister" in the band and that is Ana Matronic who only sings on occasion. The brunt of the vocals are provided by the talented Jake Shears. They actually got a name for themselves when the released the single "Electrobix". That song didn't do much but the b-side, "Comfortably Numb" did. It had them on covers of magazines such. But now to their original songs. The first track I was exposed to was "Take Your Mama", one of the best tracks on the album. It has a bit of a disco feel but also sounds a bit like Elton John. You may hear Elton referred to a few times throughout this review. It's the fourth track where Jake is a dead ringer for Elton. "Mary" is a gentle ballad making ballads cool once again. But the Sisters seem to be most at home in their disco style. "Lovers In The Backseat" is another good retro track that brims of brilliance. "Tits on the Radio" is cool track with a bit of an obvious observation "You can't see tits on the radio". It is one of the few tracks where Ana takes on the lead vocals and shows us how close electroclash and disco really are. Speaking of electroclash, take on "Filthy/Gorgeous" and try to have Ladytron keep up. And then we head back to Elton territory for the closer "Return To Oz". This album is solid and while it may irritate some listeners, I really don't care. I'll be dancing to this album for years to come. One track that should have been left off is "It Can't Come Quickly Enough" due to weak content. Thank you Scissor Sisters for creating a fun album, albeit not exactly original.
