When presented with two albums released at the same time, sometimes I just take a chance with one of them. That was the case with Lambchop's No, You Come On, released in tandem with You Come On. It was actually a friend that told me this one was worthwhile. I think with these releases we are to take Kurt Wagner and his crew as chamber pop musicians rather than alt.country. The first track on No, You Come On is an instrumental called "Sunrise", setting the pace for the album. "Low Ambition" is where we get Kurt's deep baritone introduced. With pianos, guitars, and various percussion instruments we get a lush arrangement on this track (and many others). On the next track we are introduced to the strings, finely arranged to suit Lambchop's sound. They really pick up the pace on "Nothing Adventurous Please", a song that really shows them rocking out. I would dare Lambchop to think about a full album at this pace. I think that would be a great project for them. One of my favorite tracks on this one is "Shang A Dang Dang". There's not much too it, it just grooves nicely. "About My Lighter" is one of the only one's that you might fit in the No Depression category with a slight bit of early Wilco twang. While I don't know if Wagner's smokey vocals would appeal to a wide audience, the songs and arrangements might. If Lambchop was to have a high point, this album might be it. I might have to check out You Come On now.
