Tell the world over and over, convincingly, that you are the best rock band in the world and people will start to believe you. That's exactly what The Hives have done. Is it true? Well, I guess that really depends on your definition of rock. The well-dressed Swedish band has a lot in common with their fellow statesmen The (International) Noise Conspiracy and on their third album, Tyrannosaurus Hives, they are out to rock your socks off. They have an Interscope deal and one would think they would have toned things down a bit in order for mass acceptance but on this dinosaur album we get bare knuckled rock. The Hives start out with one of the strongest tracks, "Abra Cadaver". Then they move into "Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones", a track that sounds very much like "Survival Sickness" with a twist. Then we are already on the first single, "Walk Idiot Walk", a great party track that should get things going. "No Pun Intended" really sounds like The Damned's "Neat Neat Neat". I don't think they have got enough credit in this "garage" rock resurgence. Anyway... The next track, "A Little More For Little You" is a really fun track sounding like a 60s pop track on speed. "See Through Head" feels like it is about to fall apart at any given time but they totally walk away unscathed. The second half of the album isn't quite as strong as the first but still has some kicks like "Love In The Plaster". The Hives really managed to pull off a high octane album without too much repetition. The best rock album of the year? The Hives may have actually delivered on earlier promises. I guess being cocky pays off sometimes.
