There is getting to be less of a division between Polyphonic Spree and The Flaming Lips. I know we are only on the Spree's second album and the Flaming Lips have a lifetime of music under their belts so I think attention needs to be paid to Tim DeLaughter and his merry band of gypsies. The Beginning Stages Of was a great album but it was great in that it caught many by surprise. People (me included) had heard that Tim was working on his first post-Tripping Daisy project but I think few expected such great things. Now that we are up for the sophomore album from this approximately 30 person group we know what they are all about and what their potential really is. It's a deeper album with some reflective tracks like the eager 10 minute plus track "When The Fool Becomes A King". There are rock tracks thrown in for good measure (the fun and slightly rambunctious "Hold Me Now"). The group have decided to break each track into "Sections" 11-20. Even with the lush production on the first album, Together We're Heavy boasts an even more fitting sound thanks to producer Eric Drew Feldman. You might through Polyphonic Spree chamber pop, if you could fit the band in the damn chamber. Anyway, is this album better than their debut? I don't think so but it is indeed it's equal. The two do seem a little like siblings and that is a good thing. As with most bands that harken on a good thing, they will soon realize that it won't last much long that 2-3 albums. People catch on and aren't stupid. But in the meantime, let Polyphonic Spree wash over your every being and take you to new levels.
