El Jefe - El Jefe's Amorphous Phormula
El Jefe is a fairly new act coming to home from San Francisco. They are the newest hip hop group to integrate many little outside influences into rap music. The coolest thing about El Jefe is their Jack Johnson style guitar that makes it's way throughout most of their tracks. Gentle guitar picking that helps keep the rhythm going. Try "Molasses" on for a great example of this guitar. There are three MCs playing the game here: Nomad, Wiz, and Daryl. They are all talented and as is the case with a multiple MC group, there is a lot of diversity in what they can deliver. Some of the tracks are a little below quality but then there are others that really show El Jefe is cutting a niche for themselves. While it takes a little while to get going, the first real track on Amorphous Phormula, "Elements" has some really nice verbal flow happening. It has a bit of a nu-metal sound going on but not quite as heavy. Then there is the track "Os and Flows" that oozes of a classic dub feel. It is quite a forward-thinking track. I kind of get a 311 feel on "Nature Signs". It is a little heavier with a horn introduced in it. I quite like it. I found that I had to be in the mood for El Jefe but they do provide something a little different. Check it out if you see it in your local shop.
