I immediately took to Atreyu's debut album and fully enjoyed it, so needless to say, I approached The Curse with a few reservations, wondering if the California band could meet Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses. Well, The Curse does meet expectations but doesn't go much further. The way I see it, The Curse is a refinement on Atreyu's debut album. The vocals are a little crisper and the riffs are razor sharp. I can't help but love the ever-building of "The Crimson". If you haven't been exposed to "screamo" you need to open up and take a listen to "Bleeding Mascara". It's the perfect mix of Agnostic Front meets Iron Maiden in P.O.D.'s basement. The scream keeps the edge up but the riffs that Dan and Travis come up with are un-fucking-believable. Atreyu play a brand of dynamic punk (if I even dare call it that) that is ready to break out. We have seen a few bands like Alexisonfire to slightly break out but it's funny that this genre isn't seeing huge popularity. I know it's big in the underground world but bands like Atreyu have an accessible sound that would be a nice addition to radioplay, if they ever got there. The Curse comes highly recommended.

I think that this album is a little bit below Suicide Notes And Butterfly Kisses, but it is still a good album nonetheless. Songs like The Crimson will definitely get you into feeling this album a little bit more. The screaming i think is a little lacking, and the drummers vocals can become a little annoying after hearing it so many times, but the guitar and bass never gets tired. The Curse is another one of those example of Victory Records finest. I wish there were more break downs within this album, and i do wish that sometimes the songs were a little harder. But other than that, this is a good CD.
