The first chapter in the second book. Deep Elm has been plugging along with their compilations of unreleased material from some of the worlds coolest up and coming bands. This Is Indie Rock marks a new beginning for the label. We get the quiet (the softly spoken Joanna Erdos' "Silver and Gold") followed by the agro-loud (El Paso's Siva's "G"). Every once and a while on the Deep Elm compilations, we see bands that have already released albums on the label, but for the most part we are presented with bands that have no affiliation with the label. The subtitle says it all: "The Best Bands You've Never Heard". Clair De Lune is the only exception on This Is Indie Rock. The album opens up strongly with a song that has a 90's feel to it. The band is called The Pit That Became A Tower and the song is "I Must Save The President". One band that really grabbed me was one called Frontiers and a song called "Second Hand Stories". It is very gentle and acoustic with some pretty fun finger-picking. Yeah, a little different for Deep Elm but I have a feeling that this will be a band we see something big from. All twelve tracks are good, some tracks do stand out more than others though. Saturday's contribution is great. They are heavy but not heavy enough to grate. Run out and grab this album if you are into discovering new, unheard bands. Deep Elm is doing us a service by picking through all the bands.
