Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch have been buddies for ever and it was really only a matter of time before they recorded a full-length together. For many years, it was hard not to find a touring bill without both of these guys being on it. The way the songs presented themselves on You Can't Save Everybody is that they just sat down and named songs that they'd written and performed but hadn't recorded. This was basically achieved in a mere three days. Kane and Welch invited another longtime friend and multi-instrumentalist, Fats Kaplin, in to record the album. The music on You Can't Save Everybody sounds like it was meticulously written. Some of the songs are pretty lively like "Jersey Devil", some are along the lines of Steve Earle's story telling like "Flycatcher Jack and the Whipporwill's Song". There are also a couple ballads like "A Prayer Like Any Other". There are also tracks that sound as old as the hills like "Callin Me" with some pretty fancy fiddle playing. All around, this collection of songs is one of the best roots albums to come out this year. It's diverse with the two songwriters and vocalists. Fats Kaplin adds a lot with his nice instrumentation.
