You might be familiar with the name Aaron Deer, but then again you might not. He is a member of The Impossible Shapes and John Wilkes Booze. The Horns of Happiness is basically his solo project even though he has most of The Impossible Shapes helping him out with A Sea As A Shore. This project is a little along the lines of an Olivia Tremor Control (not quite as psychedelic) or The Microphones. The Horns Of Happiness works songs like little segments of escape. Unfortunately I found myself wallowing at times and had a hard time paying attention to the album in its entirety. The musicianship is beautiful and the people playing with Aaron are fantastic. It's the song structures that leave you wishing Deer would focus a little more. The songs are mostly gentle tracks that are pleasant upon listening but they tend to be a little on the brief side. Think of Guided By Voices that was a little rootsier. I have a feeling that the Horns of Happiness will appeal to a lot of the college crowd but also leave some looking for something a little more.
