Here's an enjoyable enough country disc, featuring at least two legends of Americana, pedal steel whiz "Sneaky Pete" Kleinow and the Band's Garth Hudson. Don't expect too much in the way of instrumental fireworks from those guys however, as they keep a relatively low profile throughout. Ultimately the disc sounds more like a solo outing for vocalist Carlton Moody and his rich baritone. Of course this is Country, not Rock, you actually have to know how to sing to pass muster here. Moody co-wrote a few of the tunes with the remainder comprised of covers and one each from Kleinow and bassist Jeff Davis. The songs are fine with "Everywhere I Go" a standout among the originals and good versions of chestnuts like "The Letter" And "Rex Bob Lowenstein", but the former is tainted by a rambling synthesizer solo from Hudson using that cheesy "brass" patch, seemingly without irony. Too much synth overall, but even his piano playing is unfocused and mixed very low (possibly for a reason). With Hudson off his game and Sneaky Pete phoning it in, an biting electric guitar would've been welcome, but other than a few licks here and there courtesy of Moody, there's not much of that either. This is clearly not the "whole enchilada", just a heap of refried beans that no one got around to eating. But hey, there still not bad.
