The Roots - The Tipping Point
Even though the Roots have been on a major label for quite some time now, they have really only achieved underground success. Their albums sell well but their success, measured by peers respect, is amazing. People look to these Philadelphian's (well, not really Philadelphia any more) for their every move. The Tipping Point may prove to be a disappointment to those of you who had high expectations for the follow-up to Phrenology. There is some pretty decent beats happening on The Tipping Point but any fan will probably tell you the same thing, something is missing. On the track "I Don't Care" they shoot for some radio exposure with a catchy big rhythm sound. It works as a single but feels awkwardly out of place on the album. Even though it is a little on the repetitive side, "Guns are Drawn" is a decent track with a bit of a dub feel to it. Black Thought seems to play a bigger part on this one but the rest of the Roots are here too. Now "Web" kicks ass. It's unfortunate there's not some heavy duty lyrical play like this one. I think you need to be a pretty big fan already in order to fully appreciate The Tipping Point. I'm not sure many will be looking to this one for inspiration, instead opting to reach back a few albums once again.
