This Oakland based punk/pop band obviously got their self-released debut in the right hands. That's what hooked The Matches up with punk stalwarts Epitaph. While not a perfect fit, the Matches do add a little more access. This band had some success as The Locals but as this album title suggests, there was another band by the same name that threatened litigation if they didn't change their name. This band is able to integrate rock, punk, metal, and pop all into one interesting mix. Tracks like "Sick Little Suicide" scream out to be heard. The album kicks off strong with a killer guitar riff on "Dog-Eared Page". I love the way they drop out the instruments and just provide the vocals. I know it's not original but it always sounds good when executed properly. Some of the tracks border a little too much on the pop side of things but the entire E. Von Dahl Killed The Locals tends to be a pretty consistent listen. The band is pretty tight for only having this one full-length under their belt. In fact, I would think that The Matches next album should prove to be a much more effective and successful album. Keep an eye out for these guys.
