Blue Cathedral marks a big change for psychedelic rockers Comets On Fire. Ben Chasney (Six Organs of Admittance) was brought in to increase the guitar intensity and man, does that do the trick. Blue Cathedral stands out like a cathedral. Another change introduced with this album is Comets On Fire signing to Sub Pop records. This, too, seems like an appropriate fit. I found that Blue Cathedral is an album that you need to warm up to. The sonic intensity is definitely not for everyone. Take the loud "Whisky River" or "The Antlers of the Midnight Sun". Blue Cathedral whips through 8 songs (a couple of them reaching over the 7 minute mark) and leaves you as a lifeless mass when you have reached the end. While some may think that there is just a bunch of wanking and screaming going on (I did at first) there is a lot more happening below the surface. There is a depth to Comets on Fire that you rarely hear from bands these days. Think of the infamous stoner rock genre and add some revolutionary psych arrangements and you might get a feel for what Comets On Fire are all about. It's the amazing guitar playing that kept me listening.
