Summer in Abaddon is the first album that I have heard from the long-running Pinback. Again, something that I have previously overlooked but after hearing this album I can't help but wonder what I've missed with their previous two albums. Summer In Abaddon will suffice as the next Folk Implosion for me. Their music is fairly gentle with an indie style to it that is quite softly spoken but has so much introspection going on that you can't help but fall in love with Pinback. The band is basically only two members even though they have had a few others in the folds over the years. Armistead Burwell Smith and Rob Crow are the masterminds behind Pinback and they need to be proud of Summer In Abaddon. The music is simple and yet very ornate. I checked out what exactly abaddon meant and it is Hebrew in it's origin and means hell or the bottomless pit. I find it a little ironic because the music on the album is quite bright and sunny in the delivery. I didn't dive into the lyrics but I can only imagine that they are a little dark. Pinback does have a lot in common with Folk Implosion/Sebadoh but this album really shines brighter than anything Barlow and company have done in recent years. The rhythms are tight and the harmonies work perfectly. The closer, "AFK", is my favorite track. I think I have found one of my favorite albums this year.
