I was quite a fan of Tim Howard's first Soltero release but he seems to have lost me on The Tongues You Have Tied. I don't know if I have just been listening to too much awesome singer/songwriter material lately but this one just doesn't stack up. There are good elements on this one like the creative "Nella Madeleine". It gives Soltero the good upbeat folky sound that it deserves. "Cloth River Song" is an instrumental with a bit of a latin flavor to it. It's nice but just doesn't quite fit into the mold. The title track is up to the quality that I remember from Soltero's debut album. But a few tracks bring down the overall quality of the album. "Old-Time Promises" doesn't quite feel like it's been fully thought out. And I really did not like "Spidercat". It seems like Howard is reaching for the Sparklehorse sound but doesn't quite make it. The production stands out on this album too. It was all done on Steve Mayone's reel to reel 8-track machine. It's pretty impressive for the older technology. I haven't completely written off Soltero but I do hope that he brings it up a notch for his next album.
