It seems like Paul Westerberg has been so inconsistent lately that it's really hard to get excited about a new album from the former Replacement. With that said, Folker is his latest effort and about his third for new label Vagrant. It's funny because the album starts out with "Jingle", exactly as it sound with the repetitive "Buy it now Buy it now" in a very Westerberg fashion. Then we start to move into the mediocre territory with "Now I Wonder". It's a good song but it just seems to be lacking spirit. He also presents an average tribute to his father on the simply titled "My Dad". A couple tracks that really stood out for me were "Lookin' Up In Heaven" (even this one could have been produced better and blown away "Here Comes A Regular"), and "Gun Shy" a rough song that could be mistaken for a Rolling Stones track. The title might evoke a bit of a folk sound but Folker is pretty much everything we have come to expect from Paul. They are indie rock songs tinged with garage style overtones. I think Paul needs to take a little more time before he releases the next album and work a little more on the end product. The songs are there but it's the delivery where he loses even his utmost fans.
