On their third release for David Byrne's Luaka Bop label and their fourth overall Los Amigos Invisibles have managed to make another incredible record. Where their previous release Arepa 3000 was a more Venezuelan friendly record The Venezuelan Zinga Zon is much more accesible to fans of all music. On this record they create a world where Disco, Salsa, Funk and Bossa Nova meet up on the dance floor and party all night. The first several tracks are a smooth blend of grooves with a disco backbeat perfect for relaxing at home by yourself or throwing into the mix at a party. If the party isnt kicking by track 8 it will be when track nine hits with the infectuous "Esto es Lo Que Hay" an awesome salsa song with hilarious lyrics then the album lets the crowd catch its breath with the pleasant "Majunche", but that is only to let you get your strength up for "Mambo Chimbo" a latin jazz track that Tito Puente would be proud of. Then the album ends with a mix of styles going from disco "El Diablo" to salsa "Calne" and then moves onto the playful and overtly sexual "Superfucker" which sounds like the theme song for a cartoon show created by Hugh Hefner. Then we shift gears for the hipnotizing "Bruja" to give everybody a chance to wind down. The album ends with a nice nightcap "Gorditas de Mario" a nice ode to women and food. From beginning to end The Venezuelan Zinga Zon is a thoroughly enjoyable record perfect for both partying and just lounging this album is both at home in a trendy bar or at block party. This band is one of my favorite live acts because it is a band that knows how to work a crowd no matter what size ive seen them play at a college parking lot and a large amphitheater and both times the crowd was completely entranced if you get a chance to catch them live DO IT! you will thank yourself for it.
