It has been four years since the two album onslaught back in 2000. Juliana Hatfield is back and by the sounds of it, she has been writing material the whole time, creating one of her most consistent albums of her career. For some reason Sheryl Crow got all the limelight when it really was Hatfield that deserved all the credit. You might even balk at the idea of Liz Phair gaining more success than Juliana but look at where that got Phair. Let's look at In Exile Deo with fresh eyes though. This is a beautiful collection of female fronted pop songs. Her voice has never sounded better, honestly. Some of the tracks have a bit of a blues feel to them like "It Should've Been You", a pretty decent piano/guitar track. But for me, the best part about Hatfield has always been the pop side of things. Have a listen to the catchy "Sunshine" or the hard hitting opening track "Get In Line". These are the things that I've cherished about her. One of the poorer outputs was "Jamie's In Town". It seemed a little too repetitive and monotonous to me. In Exile Deo is definitely one of the most consistent Hatfield records since Hey Babe. It has it all and should please even the most critical fan.
