Where did Tori Amos come from and Tori, what did you do with my Tanya Donelly? Whisky Tango Ghosts is an album that starts out with quite a beautiful piano ballad. This proves to be a consistent theme throughout the album, making Whisky Tango Ghosts seem more personal than her last album, Beautysleep. And the further you get from the opening "Divine Sweet Divide" the further you get from the Tori Amos similarity. Tanya has her own style and her voice is one of those that you recognize almost immediately. She is moving further and further away from her half-sister, Kristen Hersh as well. Kristen is rocking out and Tanya is getting more and more personal in her albums. It is indeed the case of the girl growing up and getting mature. It's the second track, "Every Devil" where the guitar makes its entry that you realize this is a different Donelly. Her voice has come around and she is so comfortable singing these torch-like songs. A bit of playfulness comes out on the title track although not quite as "tango" as it might imply. I'm sure that a lot of her Belly fans will be very disappointed in Whisky Tango Ghosts and the piano that goes along with it but people do grow up and in that process, hopefully fans will too. Tori Amos and Norah Jones fans need to look to Tanya Donelly for an amazing album. Whisky Tango Ghosts is arguably her best solo album yet.
