What is with hardcore bands and long, clunky album titles? It seems like it's the "in" thing to do if you are a hardcore band right now. Take The Saddest Landscape's new album, Lift Your Burdens For This Is Where We Cross. Somewhere along the lines, the "emo" genre got distorted with bands like Dashboard Confessional, bands that don't even come close to what emo was supposed to be. The Saddest Landscape is a band that is emo in the classic sense of the genre, not the "girl broke my heart" sort of thing. It's hard and dynamic. So with the emo genre being eaten up by the emotional punks of today, we are left with calling The Saddest Landscape some sort of version of Hardcore. The music is loud and fairly impressive although all the way through the 7 songs I can't help but think that there isn't a lot of originality in it. The heavy elements are evened out with mellower, quieter bits but again, all seems a little too familiar. If you are into this sort of thing, you might find some qualities that I have failed to see.
