Why would SilverHawk, a pop rock band that has opened for musicians such as Frank Black and The Posies, create a country album that projects images of cowboys and fugitives hopping freight trains? The concept created a Pavement meets Johnny Cash album, that's why.
As someone who usually get queasy from country music, SilverHawk's Westward proves itself to be an exception. Though not strictly country, as some songs like "Kalispell," are more Supergrass-like psychedelic pop, Westward sounds like a possible soundtrack to a western movie.
The best part of the album is that it doesn't sound as if brothers Sam and John C. Densmore, the front men of SilverHawk, had to try too hard to create these country songs. With a natural, fun feel, the country influenced sound that had the potential of completely destroying this album just adds to it.
Indie country is a categorization I rarely find myself face to face with. While indie country, in all its rarity and glory is wonderful, it's also particularly hard to pull off. Sam and John defied my original expectations and pulled the album off seemingly easily.
"I've been chasing ducks around this pond in Coos bay, getting tanked at the local bars." (Rocket to Space) That line had me sold. I mean, how much more hardcore country could an indie band get?
