It’s been a while since we have seen a Bill Laswell Axiom release. This time around, Bill looks to established crossover artists like Carl Craig, 4 Hero, Karsh Kale, and Midival Punditz as well as others to work on his interesting amalgam of beats. If you are familiar with Bill Laswell and Jay Wobble’s adventures into music then Axiom: Reconstructions & Variations will come as no surprise to you. Many feel that Laswell may arguably be the godfather of modern acid jazz. This little 8-song compilation shows you why. The album starts out with a Carl Craig collaboration entitled “Alsema Dub Mix. This has a tribal beat with a beautiful vocalist chanting in the background. It becomes very hypnotic. 4 Hero checks in next with a heavy dub track called “Orion (Dollis Dub Mix). After a few minutes of the dub thing, the drum & bass that they do so well kicks in. Zakir Hussain joins together with Bill and Jah Wobble for a creation called Bedouin Ascent and provides a track called “Secret Channel (Asian Resistance Mix). Six Degrees recording artists Karsh Kale and Midival Punditz each throw a track into the mixer and the results are intriguing. Laswell and Wobble make a powerful team when it comes to this type of dark acid jazz and breakbeats.
