Canada's k-os impressed a lot of folks with his debut album cleverly called Exit but I don't think anyone was ready for what he was to bring on his sophomore album, Joyful Rebellion. He starts out strong with "Emcee Murdah" with a powerful sung chorus, with a slight bit of a latin guitar flavor. This just gives you a taste of how much further k-os has expanded his boundaries. The strings on the third track, "Man I Used To Be", really adds to this soulful song. I don't know what it is but this guy manages to make hip hop sound so fresh and important. There is a bit of reggae on "Crucial" but it is is K-Os' vocals that are the highlight once again. The bouncy "Crabbucket" is one of my favorites and one of Joyful Rebellion's highlights. It's one of those songs that you could play for anyone and they would start bopping around. "Commandante" has a really heavy latin feel to it, complete with a seniorita providing the intro in Spanish. "Hallelujah" is almost a play at something along the lines of a Jack Johnson or something similar, proving K-Os has a great singing voice too. "Neutroniks" shows him make a play for some of today's finest beats with a here-and-now feel. Joyful Rebellion is one of those hip hop albums that is the perfect mix of great music and great vocals. It makes a play for one of Canada's classic hip hop albums.
