What started off as a side project for Greg Dulli, The Twilight Singers have morphed into something much more. She Loves You is the third album that Dulli has done under the Twilight Singers name and it is a cover album. Greg is known for doing some pretty eclectic covers, both with The Twilight Singers as well as with the Afghan Whigs. So really, She Loves You comes as no surprise to many Dulli fans. Some of the picks might be a surprise though. He starts of the set with three female fronted songs, the first being a Hope Sandoval track called "Feeling Of Gaze". Then he takes on Martina Topley-Bird's "Too Tough To Die", arguably the finest track on the album. Third up for the threesome of female songs it Bjork's "Hyperballad". I must admit I was a little hesitant at first but Dulli takes this one and recreates it very nicely. You could say "Strange Fruit" was a bit of a strange pick, a track made semi-famous by Billy Holiday but Dulli does a fairly decent job of it, even if it is probably the weakest link on the collection. It has his buddy Mark Lanegan helping him out. Probably the biggest surprise for me is the Mary J. Blige track "Real Love". It fits into the top half of the album easily. Another little gem here is Skip James' "Hard Time Killing Floor". I hear Lanegan in on that one too. Could be a good sign of the upcoming Gutter Twins project between the two. Some other really decent tracks are Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" and Marvin Gaye's "Please Stay (Once You Go Away)". Gershwin's "Summertime" may have been a bit too predictable but he does a fine job on making it his own.

The thing that She Loves You does for me is shows me that Greg Dulli's own songs are just as strong as this collection of covers. That's an impressive feat. What's also impressive is the diversity of songs he chose for this album, showing his influence and ability.
