Songs Of Praise marks the debut for Sunderland's The Golden Virgins. It is also the first that I have heard of the band. Not knowing what to expect, I threw this baby on and was quite impressed. They have a bit of a Cracker sound going on with a bit of a Greg Dulli feel looming over top of some of the songs. The album opens up with an instrumental called "Waltz Of Praise" showing some fine musicianship while not going over the top. Then the guys move into "Shadows Of Your Love", a dark and harrowing tale. It's when they get into "I Want To Believe You" and "Sleep With Me Tonight" you start to hear the Greg Dulli comparison. Lucas Renney sounds a little anguished at times and has the same sort of nasally sound as Dulli. I did find a couple tracks annoying like "The Thought Of Her". A little to in-your-face for what the tone of the rest of the album is. My favorite track, though, is the upbeat and bouncy "Renaissance Kid". It has a bit of a 90s indie feel to it but it is still worthy of a listen. Another decent track is "Light In Her Window" that is a bit of a piano ballad. I would keep an eye out for The Golden Virgins. Songs Of Praise is as good a debut as most bands could hope for and I do think that experience will be their key. Not outstanding but still worth your time.
