Well, this one took me by surprise. I was totally under the impression that King Cobb Steelie had broken up. I can't remember where I heard that or if it was even close to being true but anyway Canada's groove junkies are back with their fifth full-length and it's entitled Destroy All Codes. It's as funky as hell but there is something a little different here, it's primarily instrumental. Before you get all weird on me let me tell you that Destroy All Codes is actually a decent outing. Yeah, they don't have any big support (Mayday was on Rykodisc) except from Canada's own Outside Music, but Kevan Byrne seems to still be motivated. There are times when I feel that the band didn't quite polish up all the rough edges on the music here but for the most part you won't be able to stop your head from bobbing. Sure, Al Okada has left the folds but it seems as though he was fairly easily replaced with Geoff Walton. There is one really cool track with female vocals called "Hello Everything". It's got that downtempo feel to it but the rest of the album is filled with more upbeat grooves. I don't think that Destroy All Codes will turn on that many new King Cobb Steelie fans but it is an album that longtime fans will enjoy, even without the vocals. I still remember seeing King Cobb Steelie in a live setting and it was one of the coolest small venue shows I ever saw. You just kind of got into the groove with the band and felt free. This album is sort of like that experience even though some of the tracks don't really feel like they were completed, production-wise or recording-wise. It is an album that will grow on you if given the chance.
