The Folded Palm marks my introduction to the much lauded Canadian band Frog Eyes. Victoria's indie darlings have done two previous albums that have gained some diverse fans. Sure, they aren't on MTV or Much Music but Frog Eyes probably deserve to be. It's understandable that they aren't because Carey Mercer seems to have a swearing problem. It kind of works with the fucked up music that they compose and play. They have the potential of being a band like Blood Brothers without all the screaming. Their music is hardly holds form and is charming at the same time. Mercer has that warbly crazed vocal that really demands your attention. I would guess that Frog Eyes is one of those bands that you would either love or hate, very little in between. But then again, I'm a little in between. I've listened to the album a few times and have found different things each time, some that bug me and others that I love. I end up hearing a lot of similarities to that of Rheostatics' Martin Tielli's vocals. That would be where the Rheostatics comparisons end. I found the quieter songs on The Folded Palm to be a little more compelling than the louder ones. I hear a little Nick Cave in Mercer's vocals as well. Carey is a little more crazed that Nick, if you can believe that. The Folded Palm does take some time but it is a grower.
