It's been a while since I have heard a good heavy album and High On Fire is just what the doctor ordered. Matt Pike formed High On Fire after his other death metal/stoner rock band Sleep folded. Sleep was highly respected and although it's taken a little while for High On Fire to get up to speed but Blessed Black Wings is a reason to rejoice indeed. The album starts out with a riff that wouldn't be far off of Metallica's Kill 'em All. It's called "Devilution" and it gives you a good idea of what to expect from this album. The vocals are much more aggressive than Metallica's have ever been, making "Devilution" one fucking heavy song. And then the very last song, an instrumental called "Sons Of Thunder" roars like my favorite stoner rock band Che. It's thick and bottom heavy. Then on "To Cross The Bridge" we get a thick death metal sound that is sludgy as hell and is on par with some of the groups coming our of the Nordic countries. Mixing the best from the stoner rock scene with hardcore as well as some classic Sabbath type elements High On Fire is sure to please the most hard to please metal head. So from one spectrum to the other we have one of this years most promising metal releases.
