Has success gone to And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead's head? You might think so with the grand opening of Worlds Apart, "Ode To Isis". It sounds like it belongs on a Queensryche album. And then they get into the drawn out entry into "Will You Smile Again For Me", a trippy track, one of the trippiest Trail of Dead have done. It also has elements of Epic era Faith No More. Funnniest part is the transition to the title track where kids are laughing and Conrad Keely saying "Fuck you man", and the kids laughing even more. I must be all whacked out because that song reminds me of Polyphonic Spree. Then we get something we haven't seen from Trail of Dead before, a piano ballad. "The Summer of '91" sounds like it should be on Straylight Run's latest. It's a good track, just a major departure for Trail of Dead. Let's start to think of ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead more as a prog rock band and we'll be much better off with our expectations. The band really has moved away from indie rock darlings from the Madonna era into something much grander and fuller. "Caterwaul" is another great driving track that might appeal to Smashing Pumpkins fans. It has a big wall of guitars and some fairly subdued vocals, save the chorus. There are parts of "A Classic Arts Showcase" that are reminiscent of the older Trail of Dead but in reality, it has moved so much past that. You want prog? Try on "To Russia My Homeland". It belongs in the classical section of your local music store, not the indie rock area. And then to really mix things up, "All White" is a good example of glam rock, ala Mott The Hoople. Worlds Apart doesn't have the grip that Source Tags does but you have to give Trail of Dead credit for moving forward. This is not the same album. It is one that will take some time to grow and it probably will.
