There was a bit of hype behind Straylight Run and this self-titled debut. It features former Taking Back Sunday members Shaun Cooper and John Nolan as well as his sister Michelle Nolan and rounded out with Nate Ruess. There is no doubt that this is emo but as the bio properly reported Straylight Run brings it up to the next level. This album is big in sound and songwriting. I did find that after a few songs a lot of it sounded the same but I did like it for the most part. It was tracks like "Another Word For Desperate" and "Dignity And Money" that sort of ran into each other. It's a bit of a depressing listen for the most part. But I have to ask, what business does "Tool Sheds and Hot Tubs" have being on this album? It's a pop track complete with synth sounds. Michelle has a nice voice but this one just doesn't fit into the depression of the rest of the album. A better example of what she's capable of is the mellower (complete with cello) "Now It's Done". So really, the album is decent in a world of emo imitators but the end result is a mediocre album that should please Cooper and Nolan's fans as well as an emo crowd. Straylight Run does bring some new ideas into the fold though.

I think this album is a decent debut release from Straylight Run. Their first single, "Existentialism On Prom Night" is a great single with a beautiful chorus. Thats what this band is about, mostly good verses and beautiful chorus'. John Nolan really brings the vocals he contributed with Taking Back Sunday and applys them here with his new band, and he does it with great pride. I applaud this band for trying something new and putting it out in their release. This has lead them to success. Though it's not as big as TBS, this band might just make it to that level one day. I havent heard the follow-up to this album, but i would be very willing to listen to it, and see if they can continue with this great album.
