Luke Doucet is the infamous lead in Canada's revered Veal. OK, he's not so infamous but in the songwriter world he is respected. Uh, well, in Canada anyway. Outlaws: Live and Unreleased is Doucet's new solo outing with songs that are, yup, Live and unreleased. You have been paying attention. This is my first introduction into Luke's solo work but I have been paying attention to the work he has done in Veal. Outlaws showcases Doucet in a little more personal environment. Throw a live setting in and you really can't get much more personal. The first track on the set is "Emily, Please", and it starts out like it's going to be a Huevos Rancheros track but breaks into a Caribbean feel complete with rolling drums and a cool guitar riff. Luke then moves into a more of a rolling country song called "Outlaws". "Buttercloud" is a little more relaxed with some pretty interesting guitar work being provided by Doucet. On "Pedro" Doucet could pass as Jeff Buckley. I know people are probably tired of that comparison but the guitar and vocals together really reminded me of Jeff. Melissa McClelland joins Doucet on a cover of Tom Waits' "Gun Street Girl", a really impressive duet with both playing off of each other. Overall, this live set (and two unreleased studio tracks that are worth picking this up for) has a great feel and will appeal to both alt.country fans as well as some indie rock fans.
