Here's a gimick that I never thought of, phone up Julie Andrews and see if she might be willing to provide vocals for your post-punk band. That's not quite what Submission Hold do but Jen Throwup's vocals do have that sort of range. Throw in a British accent and you have a politically fueled Andrews. Anyway, What Holds Back The Elephant is Submission Hold's third or fourth release (hard to tell with all the 7 inches they've done) and it is a unique slab of politic punk (if you can even call it that). Jen's vocals is what makes this band different than a lot of other bands in the same sort of post-punk genre. The band play an angular sort of rock that really wouldn't sound out of place with aggressive harsh vocals (which Jen does turn to from time to time). The band is full of very talented musicians with some of the best drumming I have ever heard. People are saying that it was only a matter of time before this left-wing band would find their home to be the political label G-7 Welcoming Committee. It is a good fit. It takes a bit of patience to get into Elephant. I hear influences ranging from Jane's Addiction to Fugazi. The band possesses a lot of creativity that comes out on tracks like the closer "Lost and Found". Contrast that song with the opener "Final Coup of the Last Millennium" and you have quite a broad spectrum that the band covers. Think along the lines of Don Caballero or Unwound for a starting point. It really is hard to pinpoint Submission Hold but that's a good thing. The bad thing is that sometimes I did find them annoying.
