I can't say what I was expecting with The Great Depression but regardless of what I was thinking, I am impressed. With very little fanfare, this unsuspecting album snuck up and caught my heart. The music has a little in common with other chamber pop bands and The Great Depression does it so well. Listen to "The Sargasso Sea" and try and not get caught up in the immediate pop hooks that these guys develop. This group is comprised of 6 members residing in Minneapolis, MN and Madison, WI. The songs on Unconcious Pilot are all gentle in their delivery and content, making the listener feel at home and relaxed. The band sounds so comfortable with one another, which is also impressive because this is only their second full-length album. The album starts out with "The Baltic Sea", a song that they manage to evoke a gentle sailing feel on. The sound that they get going on there with the strings and synth really make it into a majestic piece. There really is no doubt that you have to be in the mood for The Great Depression. It is mellow music, if not a little upbeat, and works really good later in the evening. I also found Unconcious Pilot to be a great album to work to. Nothing too abrasive. Really, if you have a penchant for swirly mellow pop, The Great Depression will be right up your alley. This is a very decent album.
