The Ex is yet another of those bands that every indie guru should know about and yet Turn is the first album I have heard by the Dutch band. These guys (and girls) have been putting out albums since the early 80s so a credit to them, they have stood the test of time even if they haven't attained a huge following. Turn is the bands third album on Touch and Go and it is quite an accomplishment. Turn is a double album with a somewhat heavy political statements. From what I have read, The Ex really haven't changed much in their 25+ years of existence which really shows that there have been many a "post-punk" band that followed their template. This "post-punk" style came about when punk was in it's heyday and the angular music that these guys deliver really show that they were much ahead of their time. Steve Albini is in charge of the production and he does a great job allowing The Ex to do what they do best, make guitars beg for mercy. The band's primary vocalist GW Sok rants in a similar manner to him (Albini) and maybe even Fugazi's Brendan Canty but the guitars and arrangements have a little more jazz influence. "The Pie" starts out with GW yelling out the recipe for how to bake a pie and then they go on about how they are trying to globalize the pie. Weird and wonderful at the same time. A few listens should get most listeners into this but there are those that would find Turn annoying and long.
