Apples In Stereo front-man, Robert Schneider decided to take a break from the Apples and pulled together a few friends in for this new lo-fi project and called it Ulysses. The songs on 010 have such a 90s indie rock feel that it is so eerie. On tracks like "Change" I get an overwhelming Superchunk feel. Schneider's voice ends up so much like Mac's. Then on "Castles In Spain" there is a heavy Pavement influence at work. There are some awesome songs on 010 but the problem lies in the production. It really is painful to listen to. There is lo-fi and then there is lower fi. This recording falls into the latter with much disdain. I would love to hear Ulysses done in a studio. It would have SO much more appeal. If you are into lo-fi indie pop this album would warrant 5 stars but I feel that the equipment is so readily available to record properly, even in one take, people should use it.
